For the last 25 years I have been in the sales profession selling mostly intangible items like iinsurance. In 2002 I partnered with another gentleman to start a small business in which I was in charge of sales and getting the new business off the ground. This is a service business and it all comes down to customer service. Selling customer service is easy except when your customer service is not very good.
During my selling career I have come across really nice people and people that were quite rude. The people that were not very nice have missed the point of owning a business and trying to make a profit. They might treat their customers o.k., but when it comes to salespeople they show another side of themselves. They hang up on you, tell you to never call again, put you off until you just give up, etc. What they are failing to understand is that SALESPEOPLE ARE CUSTOMERS TOO!
When I am trying to make a sale and I come across a very rude business owner, if I have the opportunity to get my point across I always tell them that you are speaking to a potential customer. "Would you talk to a potential customer like you just spoke to me?" The business owner should be aware of their actions for everyone they speak to because one bad experience could end up costing them a lot of money in bad publicity. Would you do business with someone that treats you like crap? Would you then go out and tell someone that the owner was so rude and you would never do business with them again, ever?
If you are a business owner please keep in mind that whenever you are talking to a salesperson you are also talking to a potential customer. I don't know about you, but I like to do business with people that are nice to me and actually want to do business with me. Over the years I can't begin to tell you how many rude people I have come across that I have told everyone about. That is the type of publicity you don't want to have. It is just as easy to be nice to someone as it is to be rude. When I approach any business owner I expect to be treated with respect just like a customer would. Nothing moves in this country without a sale being made. Remember, salespeople are customers too!
